Six rows, six columns, and 2×3 boxes. 6×6 is the step between a kids' 4×4 and a full 9×9.

Why 6×6 works
There are enough empty cells to think, but not so many that a new player stalls. Boxes are 2×3, so you still practice scanning two directions.
